Chitosan Powder

Short Description:

Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine (deacetylated unit) and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (acetylated unit). It is made by treating shrimp and other crustacean shells with the alkali sodium hydroxide.Chitosan has a number of commercial and possible biomedical uses. It can be used in agriculture as a seed treatment and biopesticide, helping plants to fight off fungal infections. In winemaking it can be used as a fining agent, also helping to prevent spoilage. In industry, it can be used in a self-healing polyurethane paint coating. In medicine, it may be useful in bandages to reduce bleeding and as an antibacterial agent; it can also be used to help deliver drugs through the skin.More controversially, chitosan has been asserted to have use in limiting fat absorption, which would make it useful for dieting, but there is evidence against this.Other uses of chitosan that have been researched include use as a soluble dietary fiber.

    Chitosan Powder Product Description

    Product Overview
Chitosan Powder is a natural linear polysaccharide derived from the alkaline deacetylation of chitin, a structural component found in crustacean shells (e.g., shrimp, crab), insect exoskeletons, and fungal cell walls. Composed of randomly distributed β-(1→4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units, it is biodegradable, biocompatible, and exhibits low toxicity, making it a versatile biomaterial certified as “Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS)” by the U.S. FDA .

    Key Features

    1. High Purity & Customizable Specifications:
      • Deacetylation Degree: ≥75%, ≥85%, or ≥90% (adjustable for industrial or pharmaceutical needs) .
      • Viscosity: Ranges from 10–200 mPa·s to ≥800 mPa·s (tested at 1% concentration, 20°C) .
      • pH Stability: 5.0–8.5 (soluble in dilute organic acids like acetic acid) .
      • Low Heavy Metals & Microorganisms:
    • Heavy Metals: ≤10 ppm
    • Arsenic: ≤1 ppm
    • Total Aerobic Microbial Count: ≤1000–2000 CFU/g (meets industrial and food-grade standards) .
    1. Functional Properties:
      • Cationic Charge: Binds to negatively charged particles, enhancing flocculation in wastewater treatment .
      • Fat Adsorption: Captures up to 12× its weight in lipids, aiding in weight management supplements .
      • Dietary Fiber Benefits: Promotes gut health by adsorbing toxins, lowering cholesterol, and regulating blood pressure .

    Applications

    1. Wastewater Treatment:
      • Removes suspended solids, heavy metals (e.g., Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺), and reduces COD/BOD levels in textile, mining, and dyeing industries .
    2. Agriculture & Biostimulants:
      • Seed Coating/Foliar Spray: Enhances germination rates (e.g., +15% in cucumber seeds), drought resistance, and crop yield (+8.42% in maize) .
      • Natural Pesticide: Suppresses fungal/bacterial pathogens (e.g., tobacco mosaic virus, tomato wilt) .
    3. Food & Health Supplements:
      • Dietary Fiber: Added to baked goods or capsules for cholesterol reduction and digestive health .
      • Fat-Binding Agent: Used in weight-loss formulations (e.g., 275 mg capsules, 4–6 tablets/day) .
    4. Biomedical & Pharmaceuticals:
      • Drug Delivery: Improves oral absorption of poorly soluble drugs .
      • Wound Healing: Hemostatic and antimicrobial properties support medical dressings .
    5. Industrial Uses:
      • Paper Strengthening: Acts as a sizing agent and retention aid in pulp processing .
      • Oilfield Chemicals: Enhances shale gas extraction efficiency as a viscosifier .
