Mangosteen is one of the most exquisite fruits in Asia. The flavour is very delicate, tangy-sweet, and the flesh is soft, white and pulpy around a large, edible but rather bitter seed. It is encased in a hard, purple shell which offers an attractive “serving dish” for the soft white segments which can be easily scooped out with a fork or spoon. At the base of the fruit one can see how many segments the fruit contains by the number of small leaves on it.
